How to Stay Active during Social Distancing

By: Kristina Stojanoski

Social Distancing is something that has definitely impacted a great deal of us. I know some of us have been in a rut, and with all the uncertainty and stressful things happening it can feel good to take a break for yourself and take your mind off things. It's proven that getting some movement in makes your body produces endorphins that make us feel happier. My favorite thing to do when I'm feeling off is get my body moving. It doesn't have to be a lot. It could be anything from walking around the neighborhood (while social distancing), doing yoga, or dancing to some good music in your pjs.

Personally I enjoy doing a bit of yoga. It feels nice to get a good stretch in while also working on strengthening my muscles and my brain while I'm at it. The benefits of yoga are undeniable, it's said to improve quality of sleep, relieve anxiety, strengthen bones, reduce inflammation, and many more. You don't need to be a pro either. When it comes to yoga, the main goal is to maintain peace in your pose and let your mind and body be at ease. You shouldn't feel like you're straining yourself, it's best to simply go with the flow! When it comes to yoga poses I often just go about the same poses I know but here is a helpful video if you're a beginner or just looking to get a quick good stretch.

If you're into a workout that is a bit more fast paced, Kirsty Godso has really helpful videos on her instagram page where she demonstrates tons of different workouts. Another favorite of mine is Kayla Itsines, she's known for her BBG program that includes a fitness and nutrition plan spanning 12 weeks and can be done at home or at a gym. Some of these videos may require weights but most of the time these are easily replaceable by objects you have around the house.

All of this does not mean that you have to do anything if you don't want to. This time period can be stressful for many, and we all cope with things differently. If staying active is something that you have in mind then feel free to do it, and if not then watching Netflix in your pjs is totally okay too. It feels as if we're all trained to constantly be doing something and be on the go. Which is why a lot of us feel uncomfortable doing nothing. This time period we have now is finally like a time to reset.
